It isn’t often that James and I can just chill out at home. With an almost 2 year old, many nights, once he goes to sleep, are spent with me catching up on laundry, blogging, or taking a moment to enjoy one of my favorite shows while the hubby works or plays video games.
When the kiddo goes to his nana’s house for a sleepover, we usually go out that night or have something to do early the following day. We are rarely home when we are kid-free. However, last night, we took the time to have a much needed at-home date night! I wanted us to just grab a movie and some food (while staying under a $25 budget) and just relax on the couch – and that’s exactly what we did!
I wanted to watch a movie that we hadn’t seen, so our DVD collection was out. I decided to check out Blockbuster Express to browse the available movies. I haven’t used this service before, so first, I created an account. That was very easy and only took a moment…and they sent a free rental code to my email, which was nice!
We had been wanting to see “A Thousand Words” so I checked to see if it was available on the site. Yay, it was there!
Next, I checked to see if it was in a nearby kiosk. The results showed four kiosks in our area, but only one had the movie. It was on the other side of town and not near the Walmart we’d be going to for food. Still, we figured it would be worth it to enjoy our night with this funny movie!
Before leaving the house, I decided to check where I could return the rental, as I hoped I wouldn’t have to drive out of my way again. Luckily, you can return your rental to any Blockbuster Express kiosk, so I’ll be able to take it to the closest one less than 3 miles from my house. Once I had that info, I was ready to go!
My first stop was to drop off my son at my mom’s work. He loves staying the night with Nana so I know he will have a good time while we are enjoying our date night. Once he was in her care, I left to meet my husband after work. We traveled up to the Blockbuster Express kiosk, which was located outside of a Food Lion.
We immediately spotted the movie on the first screen and were checking out within a minute. We used our debit card to pay and got in the car to head to Walmart. In order to get festive with our #CouchCritics date night, we opted for grilled chicken salad. The lettuce represented the leaves from the magical tree in the movie!
To make the night quick and easy, we grabbed the already cooked chicken, French bread from the bakery, and bagged salad mix. We also got a few snacks from the boxed movie candy section!
Checking out was very quick. There were lots of lines open and we got into one where the customers in front of us were finishing up. The associate was nice and chatted with us as she rang up our items. Finally, we were headed home to have our date night!

We got the salads ready together as we chatted about the movie. The excitement was building! I tossed the salads together in our bowls while James heated up and buttered the yummy French bread. They were both delicious when we sat down to enjoy the movie and eat.
“A Thousand Words” is a great comedy that kept us laughing through the film. Underneath the laughs, however, there is a great story line and a powerful message to take away. I felt so relaxed, inspired, and satisfied – both with our movie choice and the yummy dinner we made – when the flick was over. My full review will be on the Couch Critics website soon!

This sounds like a fun night. I can understand not getting much time alone because of a little one. We like planning a “date night in” sometimes, too.
