Since Baby #2 is on his way, we have been thinking of ways that we can get Sawyer excited about being a big brother. When we realized that the nursery would be done heavily in teddy bears, my immediate thought was to have our kiddo create a bear for his little brother. Luckily, we were able to do a review for our local Build-A-Bear store this past weekend.
When we first walked in, we were greeted by one of three friendly girls working there. She was expecting us and told us to help ourselves in building the baby’s bear. With so many animals to choose from, it was a tough decision. However, he finally settled on the super soft Sweet Velvet Teddy.
Our next step was to choose a sound for the bear. Again, there were many options to choose from! Sawyer settled on a device that allows the animal to say “I Love You!” every time he is hugged. He carried the sound maker to the stuffing station, where another worker helped him fill his brother’s bear.
He chose a heart and she made him do so many silly things with it, like rub it on his forehead and on his belly. In the end, he kissed it and made a wish. The lady was very interactive with our son while she was filling and tying up his bear. She asked him his name, his baby brother’s name, and if he was ready to be a big brother. Sawyer turned on the shyness but he did cooperate with the actions she requested of him.
Once Baby Bear (the name Sawyer decided on while it was getting stuffed) was clean and brushed, we went to the clothing section of the store. There are even more choices over there! There are outfits, costumes, even underwear for the animals you build in the store. The cute dressing station allows you to dress your animal and allow him/her to take a look in the mirror.
Sawyer chose a bib/diaper combo for the animal, which we felt was fitting for the recipient of Baby Bear. One of the workers in the store helped Sawyer to dress up the bear at the dressing station. He was finally ready to go home, but we had one more step!
Sawyer probably spent more time at the bath tub than anywhere. Once your bear is stuffed, you must give him a bath, dry, and brush. The kiddo loves this part! I guess it kept his interest because it was a place where he could pretend. His imagination is huge most of the time!
The last phase of Build-A-Bear is creating the birth certificate for your new friend. I filled out the information while Sawyer controlled the buttons on the keyboard. The screen tells you to push the green square (located on the Enter key) each time you are finished with a screen. Sometimes, other colored shapes needed to be pressed, depending on the info needed. This is a great way to reinforce basic skills in small children!
When the birth certificate was made, we went to the checkout counter to get it. The paper was put inside the cardboard house with our new bear, so that we could take him home to the nursery. Sawyer was too proud of his accomplishment of building a baby for his brother, and couldn’t wait to get it home!
This wasn’t our first trip to Build-A-Bear, but I do think it was the most exciting. All of the workers there were VERY nice and friendly, helping us make our selections and talking with the kiddo. Sawyer now has a gift to give his little brother when he arrives!
