I just opened my Google Reader to 246 updates that I have not read. Seeing that number really overwhelmed me, so I did a clean out. There were some blogs on there that have not been updated since 2009, and others whose posts I had actually read but not cleared out of the feed reader. I also added some blogs that I have been reading lately that I haven’t added to my reader before. It’s now down to zero, which makes me feel a lot better! I’m going to try really hard to open it at least once a day to make sure I keep it from reaching the hundreds again. I’ve added it to my bookmark toolbar, so it’s right there in front of me at all times.
Seeing the huge number of updates makes me feel like I’m failing at keeping up with my online friends. However, when I visited some of the blogs tonight, I realized that I actually have been keeping up with them for the most part, thanks to Twitter and message boards. This doesn’t excuse my slacking on visiting and comments on blog posts, but allows me to feel that I am still a good online friend!

Twitter is a great way to keep up with people even if the blogs aren’t read as frequently.

I need to start using my RSS feeder again, because it seemed like i did so much better with keeping up with everyone when i did use it!!i also feel like i can semi keep up through twitter. i wish i could say on boards but i’m seriously slacking in that dept!
i think you are an awesome online friend..
if that helps!

You’ve inspired me to use Google Reader.
Can you reply to blogs right on there, or do you need to go directly to the site?
I set it up a while back with a few sites but never really check it much. It’s a lot of work opening all the sites I comment on each day though, so that would be more convienent!
You still have to visit each site to comment. It’s great because I can see who has updated all in one place.
Google Reader confuses me. I haven’t given it enough time though to actually look through it. I usually just go to my regular sites once every day or two and if there’s updates, I reply. =]

It’s not too difficult. Just add the subscriptions of blogs you want to follow, and it will update when they make a new post. That way you can see who has updated all in one place.
I can’t do readers because I prefer to go to the actual website. Plus like you I’d get really overwhelmed with all of the posts and it just bothered me, lol. Here’s to hoping you’re able to keep up!
With Google Reader, you still have to visit the site to comment…and sometimes read the entire post, depending how the blog owner has their RSS feeds set up. It’s really convenient….when I’m able to keep up with it
