When we moved into the house, one of the things immediately placed on the to-do list was cleaning and re-staining the deck. It was obvious that the wood hadn’t received any TLC in quite a while. As the years have passed however, the tasks have done nothing but sat on the list of things that we needed to get done.

“Before” – An old deck with no TLC

Until last month, that is, when we received Thompson’s Water Seal products to help make our deck pretty and protected again! I was excited to get this in the mail, but knew it would take James a couple days to get it all done. We set aside a weekend where he would only work on the deck – but the weather was a deterrent for the first two times that he got out there to clean the deck!

Finally, he was able to use a pressure washer and Thompson’s Water Seal Heavy Duty cleaner to remove the previous stain and dirt. It was easy to do – he filled up a pump spray bottle similar to what you’d see exterminators using with the cleaner and water. He then coated every area of wood on the deck with the solution and used a pressure washer to rinse it all off.

It is amazing how much better the deck looked, just after the cleaning. It was like someone tore down our old, dirty, gray deck and built us a brand new one!

“After Cleaning” – It looks brand new!

The following day, he added Thompson’s Water Seal Advanced Natural Wood Protector. There was no need to wait for the deck to completely dry, as the protector can be added to damp wood. That helped make things get done quicker. This process took a little longer than the cleaner, because he used a brush to apply the protector. Still, well worth the time he spent on it! See for yourself!

“After the Protectant” – I love the shade of honey the wood has now!

It rained the day after he added the protector, and since I had to wait 12 hours before I could step out onto the deck, I couldn’t get pictures before. But, with these photos, you can see how the wood is protected from the water. It is being repelled, similar to how wax protects a car, and simply pools up on the wood rather than soaking in and damaging it.

We have used Thompson stain before but never the cleaner. I see that it wiukd make a huge difference in the deck. Thanks for the review.

  11. Tim says:

I usually just use a power washer before the protectant, even though I know it is bad for the wood. Given your results I think I am going to try the cleaner.

Your deck looks amazing after using Thompsons’ products! Decks are not easy to build or maintain, so it makes sense to use high quality stains and protectors to ensure that they can adequately stand up against the weather.

  2. [...] Cleaning and staining the deck was not as hard as some of my coworkers said it was. I was able to get the main section of the deck(200 sq ft) done with no problem. I used a brush to stain even though others have said to use a roller or just spray it on. The total sq ft of my deck is 650 sq ft so I do have much more to go, but I will work on that later. Here is a link that shows pictures of the deck before, after it was clean and then after it was stained. Pics of Deck [...]
