When you are a WAHM, you may find that your work day never really ends. You may fit in sitting down and working at various times throughout the day, such as before the kiddos wake up, at nap times, during a movie, or after everyone else is in bed. With a schedule that works around your family, it can be difficult to decipher family time versus work time.
However, it is important that you do find a balance between the two. Working at home allows you to the freedom to set your own hours and work when you are not necessarily needed for mommy duties. If you don’t segregate the two different roles, you will find yourself suffering from burn out. What’s worse, your spouse and children may start to resent the time you spend in front of your computer as well.
In order to achieve family time as well as work time, there are a few things you can do.
1. Include it in your schedule – Yes, even though you work from home, you should still create a schedule. This will keep you on task for your work and make you more productive. With a work schedule, you will be able to step away from the computer for a significant amount of time so that you don’t become a stranger to your own family.
2. Have at least one weekend day off – It can be hard, depending on your line of work and what is expected of you, but you need to take at least one day off over the weekend. Doing so gives you a full day to spend with your family. Even if some of the day is spent tidying up the home, you can incorporate the kids into helping you so that there is more time to hang out with them once the cleaning is done.
3. Work in a quiet space with no distractions – Being able to concentrate during work time will allow you to get things done faster…freeing up more time for the family. Even if this means hiding out in the bedroom with your laptop once your spouse is home, it will be worth it to get in a few hours of uninterrupted work done. If you don’t have a spouse, consider hiring a babysitter or asking a friend to watch your children so you can focus on your work when it’s time.

I think more than anything I need self-discipline. Sometimes, even with a very supportive husband, I get out of my routine. I know that it’s okay, once in a while, but boy is it ever hard to get back on task. I do like the idea of taking one weekend day off. Thanks for the tips.

I love these tips. Wish I had a place that I could work with no distractions, but I have worked so long with noise, it really doesn’t bother me anymore.
My husband and I both have at home jobs in addition to traditional jobs and we work all the time. It’s okay now when we don’t have children, but a schedule will be imperative when we start a family. Thank you for the article.
