I have always been a lover of gift cards, giving and receiving them. I know some people don’t care to give them because they feel tey may be too impersonal or thoughtless. However, I think they are perfect for just about anyone on my list.
It’s not the gift I give to the same people year after year, but if you are having difficulty deciding on what to get someone, why not give them the total freedom of choosing what they receive? Also, gift cards make a perfect last minute gift when you forgot to include someone on your list, or decide on Christmas Eve that you really want to get someone something for the holidays.
If someone were to ask me what I want for Christmas, 95% of the time I tell them a gift card, for several reasons. One, I usually don’t know what their budget for me is. I wouldn’t want to ask for something that costs $20+ when they only want to spend $10 on me. Therefore, if I say I want a gift card, I can go get the $20 item using the gift card, or at least apply the gift card to the balance if it is less than the price of the item.
Another reason I love receiving gift cards is because I may be able to experience shopping at a store or website I hadn’t heard of before. This may cause me to browse products and buy even more than the balance of the gift card, not to mention find new and awesome places to shop!
Just because you decide to give a gift card doesn’t mean you have to slap it inside an envelope and give it that way. You could still make the gift giving experience fun for you and the recipient…even if you are just giving them a tiny piece of plastic! You can use a gift card holder that is also a stuffed animal. I did this for my husband one year, and he has the cute little monkey sitting on his desk. You could also choose to wrap it in a large box so the person receiving the card has no idea the size or shape of their gift.
In my opinion, gift cards totally rock as an ideal present for the holidays as well as birthdays and other special occasions. I see no harm in giving them, and the recipient may actually enjoy receiving the card over other gifts you may have been considering. If you don’t want to rack your brain trying to find the perfect gift for someone on your shopping list, it won’t hurt to present them with a gift card!
