I’d say we are fairly avid movie watchers here. We watch anywhere from 3-7 movies each month, depending on what is out and how busy we are. Most, if not all, of these movies are watched in our home, thanks to Neflix and Redbox.
That’s not to say that we are completely anti-theater. If there’s a movie coming out that I just cannot wait to see (Hello Iron Man 3!), I will go to the theater so I don’t have to wait.
However, there is a laundry list of why I would rather watch movies in the comfort of my own home as opposed to the theater.
- It’s a lot quieter. I don’t know what it is about the teenagers around here, but they insist on going to see the same movie I am…and sit in the front row and talk rather loudly through the film. Wouldn’t it be more fun – and cheaper – just to go chat at the park?
- It’s cheaper. Around here, it’s about $9 for a single movie ticket these days. The exception would be the matinee, but we don’t really think to go to the movies during the day. For us, it’s more of a date night thing. We can still make it a “less than $20″ event, so long as we don’t get hungry or thirsty doing the show. At home, however, the kitchen is all ours.
- The ability to pause the movie. Because you know the phone’s going to ring when you are in the theater…and if you’ve left the little ones with a babysitter, you know you are going to rush out of the room to take the call or answer the text. If by some miracle your phone doesn’t ring, your bladder is sure to be calling you during the best part of the movie.
- You can wear whatever you want. I like to get comfortable when I’m going to be sitting still for a couple hours. This means pajama bottoms and a t-shirt that probably has a stain or two on it. That’s not exactly movie theater attire, but at home, I’m free to wear it without regret.
Those are just some of the reasons that I personally choose to watch movies at home over the theater in most cases.
This week, I’m linking up with Tales from the Nursery because prompts are fun. If you are a blogger, check it out!

I am totally on the same page. I always find a way to sit in front of someone who insists on kicking my chair the entire time. I have completely given up on going to the movie theater.
I go to the movie theaters a couple of times a year, but overall I prefer watching movies at home, too. The setting is much more comfortable, and we don’t pay outrageous prices for snacks.
I like at home movies too. I love Netflix..watch online a lot!! I have not used Redbox yet.
Comfort. I’m sold at comfort. Along with the pause button.
We watch several movies a month here as well. Mr. thinks if he’s home the TV needs to be on.
The price for admission along with snack requires budgeting for our family.
I like the big screen and theater experience, especially for certain films that I’m really looking forward to. But there are definitely perks to watching movies at home too – especially the cost difference!
I definitely prefer watching movies for the same reasons as you. Besides, my boys don’t do that great in a movie theater!
Up until recently, I hadn’t gone to a movie since I was pregnant with my oldest, who is now 4. Movies in the theater are exciting and all, but I would much rather be able to relax and enjoy the movie at my own pace for less! I don’t really understand people who go to the theater and pay such high prices once a week or more!
Agreed – theaters are so darn expensive, but I’m like you – there are certain movies that are just BETTER in the theater!
Some movies are so awesome in the theater. If I could have a real home theater that would be awesome!
